How I did my Makeup in High School

Doing a post like this has been on my list for a while and now it's a really popular youtube tag. I have always had an interest in makeup but like a lot of young girls, I didn't have the budget or the skills to ensure my makeup looked good.
In high school I mostly wore eyeshadow. I only wore concealer under my eyes and rarely ever wore foundation. I hated lip gloss and lipstick and I didn't start doing my brows until a few years ago. I didn't understand bronzer, had never heard of highlighter and thought my cheeks were naturally too rosy to wear blush. Below, I recreated my three most worn makeup looks from High School. I tried to copy the technique (or lack of technique) that I used to apply my makeup.

Grade 9

 

Annabelle Eyeshadow Duo in Kir Royal and Black Revlon Eyeliner
It was my first year in high school and I wanted to look super grown up so what did I do? That's right, I went heavy on the black liner. I would actually line my lower lashes (not the waterline), then use makeup remover to remove it leaving only a very thin line right at my lashes.

Grade 10 & 11

Claire's Shimmer Eyeshadow Palette with Lancome Eyeliner in Black Coffee
I got super into the shimmers in the middle of high school but I tamed it down with the brown liner. I didn't know how to blend and I used a very shimmery, white highlight on my brow bone. These eyeshadow came in a rainbow palette with 48 shadows. I'm just thankful I went for the neutral shades and not the bright blues.

My makeup was getting to be better quality once I hit my last year of High School. Believe it or not this was actually the look I wore to my grad dance with bright red lipstick.

While I'm not exactly embarrassed with my High School makeup, I'm very thankful my beauty skills have improved.

The Blush Tag

I've seen this tag going around YouTube the last few weeks and since I love blush I just knew I had to do it. I'm not tagging anyone specifically but if you do the tag, let me know because I would love to see your answers to these questions.

BLUSH TAG QUESTIONS:

1. Best Packaging - Tarte Pin up Girl Palette: This was a limited edition palette so I don't know if  it's cheating to include it, but it has the prettiest packaging. It looks like a clutch and comes with a nice big mirror. I just think it's so cute.

2. Prettiest Color - Milani Luminoso: This was hard to choose but Luminoso is just the perfect shimmery peach. I especially love wearing it in the summer when I have a bit of a tan. It makes you look so luminous.

3. Most Pigmented - Nars Orgasm: It's almost too pigmented, my other Nars blush isn't anywhere near this pigmented. I'm not sure if the formulation is just different or what.

4. Everyday Blush - NYX Angel: It's such a nice pale, matte pink, totally perfect for everyday. It's subtle but still gives a nice wash of colour.

5. Party Blush - Tarte Glisten: It's a lovely shimmery peachy pink with gold flecks. It acts like a blush and highlight all in one. It also goes with lots of different eyeshadow looks.

6. Regret Purchasing - NYX Cream Blush in Hot Pink: I love the colour so I don't know if I actually regret purchasing it, I just don't reach for cream blushes very often so I feel like it's going to waste.

7. Least Used - Milani Red Vino: This is such a beautiful shade but it's fairly dark so it takes a light hand and a lot of blending so I don't reach for it as often as I should.

8. Most Used/Would Never Let Go Of - Nars Deep Throat: This is literally my all time favourite blush. Whenever I need to look put together and don't know what to wear, I always reach for this blush. It's a beautiful peach with just a bit of shimmer. I'm surprised I haven't reached pan yet as there's a significant dip.

9. Favorite Blush Brand - Benefit: This was hard to decide but I have quite a few Benefit blushes and I really love them. Rockateur, Dandelion and CORALista are some of my favourites. I also like the scent.

10. Greatest Blush Discovery of Last Year -Lancome Blush Subtil Aplum: I was addicted to this plum shade last fall and the formula is great, blendable and not too pigmented which is good for such a dark colour.

 11. Most Practical - Sleek Palette in Pink Lemonade: This is a beautiful blush palette with 3 shades; a shimmery pink, a cream matte pink and a shimmery peach. I think with it's variety of shades and finishes it's perfect for travelling. The packaging is also really thin and comes with a big mirror so if find it really practical to travel with.

12. Least Practical - Maybelline Master Glaze in Make a Mauve: I'm saying this blush is impractical mostly because I don't like the formula as it requires sooo much blending. The colour also isn't practical for someone with as fair skin as me. (I received this blush in an Ipsy bag).

13. Most Expensive - Lancome: is the most expensive blush I own at $40.50.

14. Least Expensive - NYX: is the least expensive blush I own with blushes as low as $8.

15. Best Blush Palette - Benefit Box o' Blushes: This was another limited edition Christmas blush palette but Benefit has some of my favourite blushes so to get them all in one palette is really convenient. The packaging however is awful, really bulky and tacky but the product inside is worth it! 

Updated: My Everyday Makeup Bag

Last Spring I did a post on My Everyday Makeup Bag, you can see that post here. Since then I've changed a lot of the products I use everyday so I thought I would do an update. Like last time, these are just the products I use every single day. Things like blush, eyeshadow, bronzer, eyeliner etc. I change up depending on my mood.

My makeup bag has stayed the same. It's from Benefit and I got it as part of a free Birthday gift from Sephora about 2 years ago. It's the perfect size to hold my everyday makeup and it looks cute sitting on my vanity.

I'll start with my base makeup. For Powder what I'm using right now is Maybelline's Dream Wonder Powder in 10 Porcelain Ivory. I really like this powder. It's creamy and fairly pigmented but doesn't accentuate my dry patches too much. It also comes with a mirror which is handy.
For my undereye concealer I have a mini version of itCosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye in Neutral Medium. This does a really good job of covering any dark circles but it does need to be set with powder or it will crease.
I use my Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer in Light 2 sparingly because it's expensive. I usually use it for highlighting. It is a really wonderful concealer, it's thick but really blendable with good coverage.
I'm still using my Revlon Colourstay Concealer in Light 2 to cover any blemishes. I have very mixed feelings about this concealer. It's not bad and does a good job covering blemishes it's just a little thinner than I would like.

Next up is my Brow products. I pay a lot more attention to my brows now than I used to which means I have more brow products. My holy grail brow pencil is the Anastasia Brow Wiz in Medium Brown as it looks natural but fills in my brows perfectly.
I also like to add a little powder on top just to make them look as natural and full as possible. Lately I've been using an ashy matte brown shadow from my Smashbox Full Exposure Travel Palette as it matches the shade of my brows really well. (I believe the shade is M6 or Ashy Dark Brown).
To keep my brows in place I use an Estee Lauder Brow Setting Gel.

Next, Lashes! I have 3 mascara's in my everyday makeup bag. My most used is Maybelline's The Rocket Volum' Express. I have to say I know this is a popular mascara but I'm not a big fan. I don't really like the brush however, it does give my lashes lots of volume.
A mascara I do love is Tarte's Lights, Camera, Lashes. I only have a mini though so I use it sparingly.
I have a Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara which is the absolute best mascara for bottom lashes. It doesn't smudge or flake and it gives them lots of definition. Plus the brush is super cute and tiny!
My eyelash curler is just from Sephora but it gets the job done.

Finally I have my Urban Decay Primer Potion which I can't live without.
My Clean and Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment which works amazingly to get rid of any spots.
And last but not least my Nivea's Lip Butter in Raspberry Rose Kiss which has been a staple in my everyday makeup bag for about a year.

Empties #1

These are some of the products I've used up over the last few months. I think empties are very interesting as you can form the best opinions on a products after you've used the entire thing.

Bioderma Micellaire Water

This is my holy grail makeup remover. It is perfect for sensitive skin and it removes makeup better than anything else I've tried. I just pour some on a cotton pad and use it to remove both face and eye makeup.

Repurchase? 
I've already bought another. And it will continue to repurchase forever.

Bath and Body Works Lotion in Warm Vanilla Sugar
I love this scent and have many things with this particular scent. I don't find the Bath and Body Works lotions to be very moisturizing. I instead use them more as a substitute for perfume. I used this as hand cream and kept it in my purse.

Repurchase?
I have many other things in this scent I don't think I'll be repurchasing anything else soon.

Covergirl Outlast 3 in 1 Foundation Classic Ivory
I've had this foundation for a really long time. It is empty even though it looks like there is something left. I was not a big fan of this foundation. I think they've changed the formula since I bought it (hopefully). I found it stuck to all my dry spots and I didn't think it blended as well as other foundations I've used. I did like that it had SPF in it.

Repurchase?
No.

Maybelline Dream  Lumi Touche in Light
I love this as a highlighting under-eye concealer. It has a thin. light consistency and blends really well. It also has a nice brush applicator. All the writing has come off the packaging and it takes a lot of turning to get the product to come out the first time but
otherwise I love this concealer. It is also cheap for how good it is.

Repurchase?
I've already repurchased.

Simple Cleansing Facial Wipes
I don't hate much but these were awful. I originally bought them to take on a trip and thought they would be good because I have sensitive skin and I know Simple is a good brand for that but the towelettes were so rough I felt like I was rubbing sandpaper on my face. For something that is supposed to be for sensitive skin, I was beyond disappointed.
Repurchase?
No.

Soap and Glory Scrub 'em and Leave 'em
I really like Soap and Glory as a brand and this scrub was really good, as expected. It had both salt and exfoliating beads that did a really good job of leaving my skin smooth. I was not a huge fan of the scent but it did grow on me overtime. The scent also doesn't linger which I appreciated.

Repurchase?
I would like to try other Soap and Glory Scrubs before I come back to this one.

 

The Body Shop Shea Body Butter

This was the best body moisturizer I've ever used. It changed my winter. I usually suffer with really dry skin in the winter but this winter my skin really appreciated this body butter. It is formulated for very dry skin unlike others for dry or normal skin which I think made a huge difference. It also smelled great.

My Travel Makeup Bag

I'm going on a trip soon and thought I'd share what makeup products I'm bringing with me.

The bag I'm using for travel was cheap from Walmart and it has two clear sides. One side I use for beauty and the other side I use for all my other hygiene products such as shampoo and deodorant. It's a big enough bag to fit everything I need and the pockets are clear so I can see everything  inside.

When packing my makeup I like to keep in mind that I will probably (definitely) buy more makeup while I'm away so I don't want to bring too much if I'm going to be adding to it anyway. However I'm also aware that pictures are a very common thing on vacations so I do want to be at least presentable if I'm going to be captured on camera for all eternity. Another thing I take into account is that it is summer and so SPF and a makeup setting spray are more important.

Face

Because it's a vacation I'm  more lazy when it comes to cleansing so I'm bringing cleansing towelettes. A moisturizer with SPF is also important so I have one with SPF 30.

 In the summer I don't like to wear foundation so I usually use concealer to cover any blemishes or dark circles and then I use powder to set and blur any other imperfections.

I can't go anywhere without my UD Primer Potion and with the summer heat I don't want my makeup sweating off my face so it becomes even more important. The same goes for the UD makeup setting spray.

Eyes

I'm bringing my UD Naked Basics because it is my favourite palette, i use it everyday for my brows and as a highlight and because it's the perfect size for travel. It doesn't really have any shimmery eyshadows so I'm also bringing my Wet & Wild Comfort Zone palette because it's small in size but has a wide variety of shimmer shades. It will give me more options for different looks.

I'm bringing a brown pencil liner and a black liquid liner just to give me options as well as a mascara.

Lips

I'm only taking 3 lip products because I assume I'll buy some while I'm away. I have a darker redish-pink for nights where I want to dress up and for everyday NYX's Beige over Revlon's Honey is my favourite  lip combination.

Other

 I'm not bringing very many brushes with me. I have my MAC 217 because it is the best eyeshadow brush around but I'm bringing another eyeshadow brush too just because. I have my Real Techniques Brow and Multitasker brush as well as a travel Revlon brush. I'm carrying them all in a Real Techniques case.

Batiste or some kind of dry shampoo is important when travelling to keep your hair looking nice for pictures. I also have a sharpener because I've run into trouble on past trips for forgetting one. Also because I'm bringing so few brushes I'm also bringing my brush cleaner. Perhaps it will be unnecessary but we'll see.

My Everyday Makeup Bag

I use a lot of the same products on a daily basis and those products live in my everyday makeup bag. Some products like eye shadow, foundation, blush etc. change based on the day and therefore I don't keep them in my bag. However the products that reside in my bag are not only some of my most trusted but they are the ones I reach for most often.
My current makeup bag is a Benefit one I got with my Birthday gift from Sephora last year. It is a good size to fit all my most used products and it is pretty.

I apply my Nivea lip butter to my lips before I apply any other makeup partially out of habit and partially because it moisturizes my lips before I apply my lip product which is usually my last step. Nivea is my favourite brand for lip balm. I like this one because it smells wonderful and leaves the softest touch of pink.

I adore my Urban Decay Primer Potion. It makes my eyeshadow so much more vibrant and last a lot longer. Plus this tube has lasted me almost a year and it's still going strong.

This is the concealer I use for blemishes and spots. It is the Revlon Colourstay in 02 Light. I am very neutral concerning this concealer. It does the job but I probably won't repurchase.

For undereye concealer I use the Maybelline Dream Lumi Touché in Radiant. The salmon colour helps counter the dark undereye circles. I love this and have already repurchased it once before.

Rimmel's Stay Matte Powder is a staple in my makeup bag. It is the perfect light weight powder to help set makeup and make it last longer. I'm almost out of the one I have and will have to repurchase.

Urban Decay Naked Basics is probably one of favourite palettes, enough so that it permanently lives in my makeup bag. I use a combination of Naked 2 and Faint to fill in my eyebrows and Venus is my favourite all time brownbone/inner tear-duct highlight. It is also perfect for a subtle everyday look as 5 out of the 6 are matte shades. It's compact case also makes it perfect for travel.

I'm a sucker for matte brown pencil liners and the Urban Decay 24/7 in Demolition is my favourite I've found. It applies smoothly and lasts a long time both on the waterline and the lash line. 

My love for the Maybelline Gel Liner is unparalleled. I wear this almost everyday. It applies so smoothly and easily and I love the way it looks as polished as liquid liner but is much easier to apply. If I could only wear one product for the rest of my life (I sincerely hope not thank you) it would be this.

Like most people I`m still on the hunt for the perfect mascara. This isn't it. The L'Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Excess is a fine mascara but it can be a little clumpy and I don't like the smell. Other than that it lengthens and thickens well. 

The Clinique Bottom Lash Mascara is wonderful at defining the bottom lashes while leaving no smudges or black circles under the eyes. It is not a necessity, but I love it!

My Sephora eyelash curlers are good at their job. My lashes are already long and curled so luckily these aren't needed as much as others might need them. They still deserve a place in my everyday makeup bag.

My last and most boring thing in my makeup bag is a pencil sharpener. I like this one because it has 2 holes of different sizes so I can sharpen all my products. It also collects the shavings which I appreciate.
